Thursday, June 19

Today, we are learning about plants and creatures in the woods that we need to be careful of.
First you need to look for a picture on the internet of a deer tick.
www.mos.org/sln/sem/tick.html has a really gross magnification of one! YUCK!
Listen while Mrs. Knutson reads some information about Lyme's Disease.

Next, find a picture of poison ivy and poison sumac.

Now see if you can find some pictures of what these do to your skin! YIKES!
So let's try to stay away from both plants and those tiny ticks.

It's a beautiful day outside, so let's go for a hike. You can leave any items here, we will be back.

Have a great hike!

Good Morning Campers!
The brainy question of the day is:
What do the Wall Street Journal and the foil paper cloth in the plastic bag in the classroom have in common?

Today is a great day for camping.

We are going to start out by learning to put up the tents in groups. We will break into small groups and we will head outside as soon as you have answered the question. After we have constructed all the tents and taken them down again, we are going to play a fun camping game outside as well.
Have a great time at summer school today!

Good Morning Campers!
Today we will be visiting a National Park.
There are several of them, but we are going to visit on-line.
Go to: http://www.nps.gov/webrangers/
Login with your name and create a password.
Then fill in the boxes and put your Secret question answer in.
Follow the directions including putting your name on your badge and print it.Move through the activities and the scavenger hunt!
Have fun visiting the National Parks and learning about the emblem. Go through all the Ranger Stations of "Historic", "City", "Wilderness". Once you get through all the activities, click on the Scavenger Hunt at the top and test yourself. You may have to go through some more activities to get the right answers. If you don't finish today, we can come back later.....remember your login and password!
We also need to learn about the trees that we will find in the National Park systems. I have a handout for you and then we are going outside to look around and see if we can name some of them!
Look at the map, how many National Forests do we have in Wisconsin?
Have a great camping day!

Welcome to Summer School!

Hello everyone!
I am so glad you are here.We are going to have tons of fun this summer here at Camping Fun!The time is going to fly by, so we need to get started right away, but first I want to let you know some of what we will be exploring.
Naturally when you camp, you need to have something to sleep in or sleep on.
So go to the internet and make a Word list of all the kinds of sleeping items you can find when camping.
Remember, not everyone sleeps in a tent!
Next, add on to your list of all the other items you might want to bring along camping even if for only one night.
Put your thinking cap on. There are lots of things. You will want to be prepared for anything, Right????Let's discuss these items together.
Some we may want to talk about in detail on another day, but for now we will just put together a list.OK.
If you finish before everyone else, find a website with the state campgrounds for Wisconsin and put it in your favorites for later. Ask me how to do this if you don't know.
Put the web link on your Word list for later too.
We usually stop for a snack near the end of the class and play a game or two. We do this in the classroom.
